Human Computation

Posted by rfrieden on June 24, 2007

Tasks like image recognition are trivial for humans, but continue to challenge even the most sophisticated computer programs.  In this lecture, Luis von Ahn, an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon,  introduces a paradigm for utilizing human processing power to solve problems that computers cannot yet solve.

Sam Harris

Posted by rfrieden on April 11, 2007

Humanity faces challenges of unprecedented scale and scope. Global warming, weapons of mass destruction…it’s a long list. Meeting these challenges will require thoughtful public debate, difficult decisions and a great deal of compromise. Too often religion impedes debate, polarizes the process of making informed policy decisions and makes compromise impossible. Whereas we ordinarily would criticize a person who advocates an irrational point of view or who refuses to compromise, they are granted a pass if their view falls under the blanket protection afforded religion.

Sam Harris believes this is a luxury we can no longer afford. I agree. Mr. Harris is the author of “A Letter to a Christian Nation” which was a New York Times best seller. I recommend this book and encourage people to listen to what he has to say. A good place to go for a summary his work is his web site. I recommend his talk at the Idea City conference. This page on his web site lists all of his videos.

Another video which is not listed on his site is a debate with Reza Aslan in Los Angeles on 1/25/2007. I found the debate to be very disappointing.

Richard Feynman

Richard Feynman is one of the most fascinating characters of the 20th century. I highly recommend his book Surely You’re Joking His talk on The Pleasure of Finding Things Out is something everyone will enjoy. His talks in Auckland (2, 3, 4) on Physics are more technical but quite interesting.
